Star Wars #1 35 Cent Price Variant CGC Universal Grade 5.5
My wife found 5 of these rare variants at a garage sale. They sat on my shelf for a month before I bothered to look at them.
As I was about to send one out to be graded, she listed them before I could stop her. Obviously, they were grabbed up immediatley. I have cut/pasted some remarks from the web for those that are interested. These comics don't come along very often. At this time Marvel was experimenting with a 5 cent price increase, with 35 cent copies of many comics available but only in a select few cities. There is some evidence to suggest (distribution markings on the comics) that the 35 cent newsstand variant of Star Wars #1 was distributed to four cities (Memphis, Toledo, Tuscaloosa and Wilmington) so are thought to be very rare indeed, with Overstreet suggesting only around 1,500 copies were printed. The first six issues would be an adaptation of the A New Hope Star Wars movie. What huge Star Wars geeks know about this comic is that it was adapted from the full shooting script by George Lucas. It has several scenes in it that was ultimately cut out from the original released film. This comic, though not noted by comic industry, sees the first appearance of Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, the droids C-3PO and R2-D2, and the iconic villain Darth Vader. July, 1977 is the publishing date for this comic that has become such a pop culture icon.
